About Dubai
The city of Dubai, dubbed as the Pearl of the Arabian Gulf, was originally inhabited
by a small settlement that lived on either side of the Creek. For years, the city
has been home to Arab traders, divers who used to pick pearls from the sea, fishermen
and a natural harbour for sailing boats and vessels. The creek runs northeast and
southwest of the city. There is the locality of Deira on the northern bank and Bur
Dubai on the southern. The two are connected by a tunnel and a coupe of bridges
with access being provided by water taxis or abras.
Bur Dubai brings many reminiscent memories of old Dubai with a plethora of old buildings,
alleyways and markets, also called souks. The famous Gold Souk and Spice Souk that
attract hundreds of thousands of holiday makers every year are located here, in
Bur Dubai. Heritage - Al Fahidi Fort, Dubai Museum (housing the ancient artefacts
that were recovered from the graves at Al-Ghusias), the wind-tower and the dwelling
place of Bastakiya district add to the historic charms of Dubai. At the mouth of
the Creek resides the magnificent palace of Sheikh Saeed and the villages of the
erstwhile divers.
The Diera locality presents a more urban look with plenty of shopping multiplexes
and gardens built in Western style. The souks here are known for merchandising spices,
apparel, perfumes, handicrafts, arts and curios, and jewels. Yet, the travellers
must note that modern Dubai is more than just a city of divers and traders. The
environment, shopping hubs and excellent sporting facilities make Dubai an ideal
tourist destination for travellers from around the world. To complement these features,
accommodation facilities in the city, especially along the south and west of the
city to Jebel Ali, are truly remarkable. The luxury hotels and resorts in Dubai
are among the most impressive in the world.
Recreation and sporting adventures at Dubai include desert safaris on four-wheel
drives, barbeque treats, sand skiing, camel rides and cruises. There is a golf course
and a cricket stadium en route to Jebel Ali. Some famous events hosted in the city
include the world’s richest horse race known as the Dubai World Cup; the PGA Golf
Tournament, Dubai Shopping Festival, in addition to scores of trade exhibitions
that are held every year.
The Palm Islands: These largest man-made islands, three in number, have been claimed
to be visible from the moon. Palm Jumeirah, first of the three islands, hosts many
hotels and private residential blocks. The Palm Jebel Ali is slated for a number
of recreational facilities including an aquatic park. The third, Palm Deira is planned
for residential houses and villas. An estimated 7,000 villas are to be constructed
here. The island will be connected by bridges, making the entire complex - the world’s
largest construction project. As if it were not enough, these islands will further
be accompanied by others (a total of 300 offshore islands), all constructed to give
the appearance of how the whole world looks on a map and thus the name “The World”.
Lavish is an appropriate word to describe it. In recent times, this area has become
one of the most visited in the city. Hotel Burj al Arab offers a panoramic view
of this complex.
In 2002, the Children’s City was thrown open at the Dubai Creek-side Park. It was
an instant hit with thousands of kids, both locally and from different continents
venturing in with rich enthusiasm. Built on a good 7,700 m2 of land and divided
into zones, the Children’s City has everything it takes to occupy even the most
demanding kids with fantasies of science, space and secrets of the human body.
Jumeirah beach is largely occupied by luxury hotels and resorts. Nevertheless, there
is a stretch that can be used by the public and travellers seeking natural beauty.
The sand is white and clean and the water clear with a bath-temperature surf. Travellers
can use privately owned stretches of Jumeirah beach or take a dip in private hotel-owned
pools, provided they buy a lunch or pay a nominal fee to the hotels.
The ancient fortressed village of Hatta and Wadi Hatta is a lush and attractive
valley in the foothills of the Hajar Mountains with superb desert scenery, on the
journey from Dubai.
